Howard threw it back with nods to the 90s, dressed to the 9s, at this year’s student fashion show

Howard is an eclectic melting pot that allows everyone the freedom to explore different avenues and styles free of judgment.

WASHINGTON — Howard University’s Homecoming began on Thursday. They kicked off the festivities strutting down the catwalk and all through the yard.

Howard’s homecoming is known throughout the city for being a celebrity-filled, jam-packed weekend full of festivities. This year was no exception, as the University showcased one of the many things it is known for: fashion.

On Thursday, the University held a fashion show that presented different lines all designed by students. The entire show was a nod to the ’90s with a Y2K twist.

When WUSA9 spoke with the students on campus and asked them to describe the fashion culture at Howard they all shared the same sentiments: Howard is an eclectic melting pot that allows everyone the freedom to explore different avenues and styles free of judgment.

That could be seen throughout every designer’s line. Everyone took elements from the ’90s and put their own spin on it, to make it unique to each designer.

The show included an appearance by Howard alum, Rachel Motley. Then recent Howard grad majored in Marketing, before landing one of the freshest sponsorships the campus has seen.

Motley partnered with Febreze, one of the sponsors of the show, to design the “Fresh AF” (as Febreze) tracksuits worn by Howard’s dancers during an intermission performance. She said that when she is designing, she likes to make sure she assesses her demographic and who her target audience is.

“When it comes to working with brands there are a lot of logistics and ins-and-outs,” Motley said. “The Febreze team has done an amazing job amplifying black voices and making sure that our artistry is showcased.”

Now that the heels are off, it’s time to stomp the yard. Howard’s “Yardfest” kicks off Friday as homecoming festivities continue.
