North Shore Art League’s members show is its 99th

The North Shore Art League held Art: Uncorked!, its 99th annual benefit party and members’ show, on Oct. 5, in Winnetka.

The event was an opportunity to view and purchase art and wines and share an evening with friends and local artists. The annual Members’ Art Show featured more than 150 pieces of artwork from local member artists including oil paintings, mixed media, photography, watercolors, and porcelain on both the first and second floors of the Community House. The artwork will be on display through Oct. 23.

The popular People’s Choice Award was won by Pat Hinkel with her artwork, “On Lake Bemidji, MN” and she was gifted a flower arrangement by The Shy Flower.

Another fun addition to the evening was a “Cork Pull,” featuring limited edition wines donated by local restaurants and NSAL board members. Attendees purchased a numbered cork and took a chance on winning a bottle of wine ranging from $40 and up. One  lucky winner went home with a $100 gift certificate for Great Coast Commons restaurant in Kenilworth and a bottle of French wine valued at $100. All proceeds from the Cork Pull were donated to the North Shore Art League and their educational outreach.

“This year’s exhibit opening and party was such a special celebration of  artists,” said Linda Nelson, NSAL executive director in a release. “With the beautiful works on display as our backdrop, the evening gave us all a chance to  reflect on what we’ve built here — a welcoming community of artists and art-lovers who truly appreciate the creative process and the League’s part in the history of the North Shore.”

HPHS alum named to Big Red Hall of Fame

Highland Park High School alumnus Chris Wroblewski recently was inaugurated into the Cornell Big Red Athletics Hall of Fame.

The guard is a three-time All-Ivy selection and two-time third-team Capital One Academic All-American. He graduated as the school’s all-time career leader in assists (482) and a 1,000-point scorer (1,202 points, 13th all-time).

A two-year captain, Wroblewski was a three-year starter who played on a pair of Ivy League championship teams, including the 2009-10 squad that advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

He ended his career ranked fourth in career 3-point field goals made (189), fifth in 3-point percentage (.414), ninth in free-throw percentage (.823), ninth in steals (139) and 10th in free throws made (279). His 119 games played ranked second all-time among Cornellians, and his 3,594 minutes played sits third.

As a senior, Wroblewski led the team in scoring (11.5 points per game) and was third in the Ivy League in assists (5.3 apg) and second in steals (1.6 spg) in earning first-team all-league accolades. He twice was named Ivy League Player of the Week during his career and became just the second player in Cornell history to surpass 1,000 points, 400 assists, 300 rebounds and 100 steals, joining All-American and Ivy Player of the Year Louis Dale, his former backcourt mate.

Wroblewski graduated HPHS in 2008, leading the Giants to a 23-6 record that season.
