Take a peek inside new class offered at Ossining High School

A school year is 180 days, with no two days and no two schools exactly alike. The students differ, the teachers differ, school cultures differ. Here, our photographers find what makes our school days anything but ordinary, the people and programs and events that make a difference, school day in and school day out.

On a recent afternoon at Ossining High School, Sylvia Schieber, a visual artist doing a residency at Bethany Arts Community in Ossining, visited Adria Ingegneri’s Fashion 2 class to teach a sewing workshop. This is the second year of implementing fashion courses in the high school’s visual arts department and first time for Fashion 2. There are 128 students registered for Fashion 1 and Fashion 2 courses this year.

“As part of their residency programs, Bethany requires their artists to do community-based events, such as workshops with schools. As a neighbor, the Ossining Schools are so fortunate to have access to so many of their artists in residence,” said Kate Mathews, Director of Cultural Arts for the district.

Senior Daniel Alvarez learns how to add a button to a garment. Alvarez said he signed up for the class because he wants to pursue a career in fashion. “I knew that the next level would be really important for me to learn because we were learning hand sewing and this year, soon enough, we will be learning how to actually sew on a machine. I was really happy they had the funds for it, for the machines and everything,” he said.
